Captions

Where Video editor › Captions, or Home › Open a tool: CaptionsCost 10 credits a recording

Captions are written from the speech in your video, timed word by word, and drawn in the picture in one of 87 caption looks. They follow your cuts, and export burned into the video, as an SRT file, or both. Captions can be written in 51 languages, in a language’s own script, in Latin letters such as Hinglish, or translated. See Caption languages.

In AI mode, ask: “Add captions”, or “Add captions in Hinglish”.

In manual mode:

  1. Press Captions in the tool row.

  2. Choose the Language (Auto (from the voice) works for most videos) and how to Write in: its own script, Latin letters, or a translation.

  3. Press Auto-caption this video to caption every clip with sound, or select a clip and press Auto-caption selected clip. The panel shows Listening to your video…

  4. When it’s done, the panel says what it heard, for example Heard Kannada with English: Kanglish.

  5. Press Choose a caption look and pick one.

Your captions appear in a Captions lane under the tracks. Click a caption there to jump to it in the panel.

The look picker plays a sample of each look. Search by name, group or idea (“highlighter”, “bounce”, “retro”), or filter by group. Every look draws the scripts of India and the world, right-to-left ones included, and the export matches the preview.

Open Customize captions in the panel:

  • Highlight each word as it is spoken, and the Highlight color (or Use template colors)
  • Position: bottom safe area, centre, or top safe area
  • Text size: 60% to 160%
  • Text color

Every caption is listed in the panel with its start time, its text, and Start and End fields in tenths of a second. Click a time to jump there.

  • Fix a word by editing the text. If the caption keeps the same number of words, each word keeps its timing.
  • Remove a caption with its ×.
  • Add caption at playhead adds a two-second caption you can type into.

Captions break into lines at sentences, commas and pauses, about 34 characters and at most 7 words a line, without ending a line on a small word like the or of.

Press Download SRT or Download VTT in the panel. Or choose Captions in the export dialog: Burned into the picture, As a file (.srt), both, or none. SRT and VTT files carry the words and timing only; looks and highlights exist in the exported video.

Listening to a recording is a captions job, 10 credits, and includes the first writing in Latin letters or a translation. Each recording is listened to once: changing the language or writing later works from what was heard, without listening again. Editing captions, changing the look, downloading SRT or VTT and exporting are free.

Asking the editor’s AI for captions is one AI edit, which includes the captions job.

  • Up to four recordings are captioned per press. Select a clip to caption the rest.
  • Up to 500 captions in the Captions panel.
  • Recordings up to 100 MB.
