Audio in the editor

Where Video editor › AI mode: Off › the inspector's Mixer and Sound tabs

The editor has the audio tools of a professional editor: clip gain, a track mixer with automation, loudness matching, ducking, EQ and dynamics, and live meters. Everything on this page is free. For noise removal and voice enhancement, see Audio cleanup; for AI voices and music, see Voiceover and Music.

  • Volume in Effect Controls sets a clip’s level, with Fade in and Fade out.
  • Audio gain… (G, or right-click a clip) sets gain before effects: Set gain to, Adjust gain by, Normalize max peak to or Normalize all peaks to.
  • The volume line on an audio clip can be shaped by hand: drag a point, ⌘-click the line to add one, ⌥-click to remove one.
  • Panner in Effect Controls places the sound left or right.

Open the Mixer tab (⇧6). Every track with sound has a strip with a meter, Mute, Solo, Arm to record, a pan knob and a fader (−60 to +6 dB), plus a Master strip. Use the stopwatch to automate a fader or pan over time.

Open the Sound tab. Choose a clip and set its Type: Dialogue, Music, SFX, Ambience, or From what it is.

Section What it does
Loudness Choose a Target: −14 LUFS (YouTube, Spotify and most online), −16 LUFS (podcasts and Apple) or −23 LUFS (broadcast, EBU R128). Press Match the chosen clips or Match every clip. Measure the mix reports the edit’s loudness and true peak.
Repair and clarity Reduce noise, hum or reverb… opens Audio cleanup. EQ presets Voice clarity, Low cut, De-ess and Warmth, and Even out the voice.
Ducking Set Reduce by, Fade down and Fade up, then press Duck under speech. Music is lowered with keyframes wherever someone speaks.
Remix Shortens a music clip so it ends on time, taking whole bars out of its middle with crossfades on the beat. Choose where it should end and press Remix to end at…

In Effect Controls, each sound clip has:

  • Parametric Equalizer with presets (Voice clarity, Low cut, De-ess, Warmth, Telephone) and up to eight bands you can drag on the curve.
  • Dynamics with presets (Voice leveler, Gentle, Broadcast, Limiter only) and controls for threshold, ratio, attack, release, knee, makeup gain and a limiter.

The meter beside the preview shows peak levels and short-term loudness in LUFS. Hover for the integrated loudness. A peak at 0 dBFS lights the clip warning.

Record your own microphone straight onto the timeline.

  1. Move the playhead to where the recording should start.

  2. Press Record in the tool row (or Record voice-over on… in an audio track’s ⋯ menu).

  3. Choose the Track, and whether to Count in for three seconds.

  4. Press Record and allow the microphone if your browser asks. The edit plays while you speak.

  5. Press Stop. The take is saved to your media and placed on the track.

Anything already on the track at that point is recorded over; Undo brings it back.

You see What to do
Choose a clip with sound first. Select an audio clip, or a video clip with sound.
Those clips are silent. The chosen clips have no sound to adjust.
The microphone could not be used. Allow the microphone for muvomi.com in your browser’s site settings, then try again.
This browser cannot record sound. Use a current version of Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari.
A nest is open: loudness is matched for the whole edit. Close the nest first.
