# Voiceover

> Add an AI voiceover to your video. Write the words, choose one of 20 English voices, and the recording is placed on its own track, with music lowered under it.

**Where:** Video editor › Voiceover, or Home › Open a tool: Voiceover · **Cost:** 20 credits a minute of speech

Voiceover records the words you write in a voice you choose, saves the recording to your media, and places it on a track of its own. Music under the edit is lowered so the voice sits clearly on top.

To record your own voice with a microphone instead, see [Record your voice](https://docs.muvomi.com/edit/audio/#record-your-voice).

## Add a voiceover

**In AI mode**, ask: *“Add a voiceover that says…”*, or *“Read the captions aloud in a calm voice.”*

**In manual mode:**

1. Press **Voiceover** in the tool row.

2. Write the words in **What it says**, exactly as they should be spoken. Up to 1,200 characters, about a minute and a half of speech.

3. Choose a **Voice**.

4. Choose **Where it starts**: **At the playhead** or **At the start of the edit**.

5. Check the price line, then press **Generate**.

When it’s done, the panel says where it went and how long it is, for example *Added at 0:00 on a layer of its own: Sarah, 14.2 s.* **Undo** takes it out again, along with the music change.

## Voices

All 20 voices speak English. The default is **Sarah**.

| Group | Voices |
| --- | --- |
| **Lifelike** | Sarah (warm, clear, reassuring), Brian (deep, resonant), George (a warm British storyteller), Alice (clear, engaging, British) |
| **Natural read** | Hannah, Cole, Sienna, Cliff, Heather, Miles, and the British Colin and Gemma |
| **More voices** | Athena, Hera, Thalia, Cora, Apollo, Arcas, Hermes, and the British Draco |

If a Lifelike voice isn’t available, the closest Natural read voice of the same kind reads instead, and the panel tells you which.

## Cost

A voiceover costs 20 credits for every minute of speech started, counted at 150 words a minute. Up to about 150 words is 20 credits. Recording the same words in the same voice again is free, and a recording that fails isn’t charged.

A voiceover recorded by the [editor’s AI](https://docs.muvomi.com/edit/editor-ai/) is part of that request’s price. A film’s first narration is included in an [AI Product Director](https://docs.muvomi.com/create/ai-product-director/) film or [AI Short](https://docs.muvomi.com/create/ai-shorts/).

## Limits

- Up to 1,200 characters per recording. For longer scripts, record in parts.
- One recording at a time.

> **Tip:** Write numbers and abbreviations the way they should be said, for example *“twenty twenty-six”* or *“A-P-I”*, and listen back before you export.

## Troubleshooting

| You see | What to do |
| --- | --- |
| *Write the words the voice should say.* | Add text in **What it says**. |
| *A voiceover is recorded from up to 1,200 characters at a time.* | Split the text into two recordings. |
| *A voice is already being recorded.* | Wait for it to finish. |
| *This voiceover needs … credits.* | You don’t have enough credits. Words already recorded in the same voice can still be added for free. |
| *The connection to the app was lost while the voice was being recorded.* | If the recording finished, it’s in your media and was charged once. Press **Generate** again with the same words and voice to add it without a new charge. |
