# Video editor

> An overview of Muvomi's video editor. AI mode and manual mode, the layout, adding media, titles, generated shots and how your edit is saved.

**Where:** Studio › All tools › Video editor, or Home › Open a tool: Video editor

The video editor is where you put footage, pictures, titles, captions, voice and music together into a finished video. It has two modes:

- **AI mode** (the default): a preview and a chat. Say what you want, *“cut the pauses, add captions, make it vertical”*, and the change lands on your edit. See [Editor AI](https://docs.muvomi.com/edit/editor-ai/).
- **Manual mode**: a full multitrack timeline in the style of Adobe Premiere Pro, with effects, colour, masks, an audio mixer and keyboard shortcuts.

Switch between them with **AI mode** in the header. Switching only changes what you see; your edit, its history and any AI request in progress stay as they are. The editor remembers the mode you prefer.

## Open the editor

- **A new edit:** on Home, choose **Video editor** under **Open a tool**, or press **New project** in [Projects](https://docs.muvomi.com/workspace/projects/).
- **An existing edit:** open it from **Projects** or **Recents**.
- **With a tool ready:** the Home chips **Captions**, **Voiceover**, **Audio cleanup** and **Music** open the editor with that tool. In AI mode they write the request into the chat (for example **Add captions**) without sending it.
- **From another tool:** [AI Video](https://docs.muvomi.com/create/ai-video/) and [AI Image](https://docs.muvomi.com/create/ai-image/) results open here by themselves. Shorts and templates have **Edit in video editor** and **Open in video editor**.

## The header

From left to right: **Back to projects**, the **project name** with its save status, the **AI mode** switch, **Undo** and **Redo**, **Versions**, and **Export**.

## Layout in AI mode

- **Left panel** with **Chat** and **Media** tabs. **Close panel** hides it; the **Chat** pill brings it back.
- **The preview**, with restart, previous frame, play, next frame, a seek bar, mute and fullscreen.
- **Format** (16:9, 9:16, 1:1 or 4:5) at the end of the transport row.
- **A frame strip** under the picture, for attaching frames to a chat message.

An empty edit shows **Add footage to start**. Drop files anywhere, or press **\+ Add media**.

## Layout in manual mode

- **Left tabs:** **Media**, **Transitions**, **Generate** (*Create what’s missing*), **Changes** and **History**.
- **The preview**, with **Use proxies**, a loudness meter, **Ask AI about this frame** and the **Format**.
- **The tool row** under the preview: **Text**, **Captions**, **Audio**, **Voiceover**, **Record**, **Music**, **Motion scenes**, **Brand** and **Adjust**.
- **The inspector** on the right. Double-click a clip, or press **Adjust**, to open it. With a clip chosen its tabs are **Effect Controls**, **Effects**, **Lumetri Color**, **Scopes**, **Mixer**, **Sound** and **Clip**.
- **The timeline** at the bottom. Drag the divider above it to make it taller or shorter.

## Add media

**Supported files:** MP4 and WebM video; PNG, JPG, WebP, AVIF, GIF, TIFF and SVG pictures; MP3, WAV, M4A, OGG, FLAC and AAC audio. Each file can be up to 100 MB, and video and audio up to 10 minutes. See [Limits and file formats](https://docs.muvomi.com/reference/limits-and-formats/).

**In AI mode**, drop files anywhere, or use **+** in the chat. They’re added to your edit and your library.

**In manual mode**, open the **Media** tab:

1. Press **Import media**, or drop files on the panel (up to 10 at a time). Imported files go to your library.

2. Add a file to the timeline: press **+** on its card, drag it onto a track, or click it and press **Add to timeline**.

3. To place it exactly, click a file to make it the source, then press <kbd>,</kbd> to insert it at the playhead or <kbd>.</kbd> to overwrite.

Where **+** puts things: a picture with see-through areas (like a logo) goes over the picture at the playhead; other video and pictures go at the end of the picture track; audio starts at 0:00.

> **Tip:** Large footage gets a small preview copy, a *proxy*, made in the background so playback stays smooth. **Use proxies** turns them on or off. Exports always use your original files.

## Titles, motion scenes and brand

- **Text** adds a five-second title at the playhead. Change its typeface, words, colour, size, animation and position in the **Clip** tab.
- **Motion scenes** adds an animated scene from Muvomi’s templates to your edit.
- **Brand** applies one of your [brand kits](https://docs.muvomi.com/workspace/brand-kits/) to the whole edit.

## Create what’s missing

The **Generate** tab makes a new shot or picture when you need one: B-roll, a background or a new idea.

1. Choose **Video** or **Image**.

2. **Describe the shot**, for example *“A slow aerial shot above a coastal city at blue hour.”*

3. For video, choose a **Length** of 5, 10 or 15 seconds.

4. Check the price, then press **Generate video** or **Generate image**.

5. When it says **Ready for your edit**, press **Insert at playhead**.

Video is generated at 768p without sound; pictures at 2K. A video costs 30 credits for 5 seconds (+5 credits for each further 5 seconds); a picture costs 5 credits. In AI mode, the chat proposes generations as cards instead; nothing is generated or charged until you press **Generate**.

## Saving and versions

Your edit saves itself about a second after each change. The status beside the name reads **Saved**, **Saving…**, **Unsaved changes** or **Not saved**.

**Versions** in the header lists saved versions of your edit. **Restore** one to make it the current edit; earlier versions stay available. See [History and versions](https://docs.muvomi.com/edit/timeline/#history-and-versions).

If the same edit was saved somewhere else (another tab or device), you’ll be offered **Reload saved version**, **Save as a copy**, **Download backup** or **Retry save**.

## Limits of one edit

| | Up to |
| --- | --- |
| Length | 60 minutes |
| Clips | 500 |
| Tracks | 16 video and 16 audio |
| Markers | 500 (100 per clip) |
| Effects | 30 per clip |
| Masks | 10 per clip |
| Undo | 100 steps |

The timeline runs at 30 frames a second. Frame sizes are 1920 × 1080 (16:9), 1080 × 1920 (9:16), 1080 × 1080 (1:1) and 1080 × 1350 (4:5).

## Cost

Editing by hand is free, and so are scene detection, mask tracking, Warp Stabilizer, reversing clips, silence and filler-word removal, the built-in music, and exporting. AI requests and some tools use credits; see the [price list](https://docs.muvomi.com/reference/prices/).
